The Mission of the Lorain City Health Department
Lorain City Health District prevents disease, promotes healthy living, and protects the environment through community partnerships.
The Lorain City Health District is a model of excellence utilizing innovative best practices for public health services focusing on prevention, promotion and protection through efficient use of resources and accountability in partnership with other healthcare providers.
Lorain City Health District values being responsive to the community, providing and seeking quality services, working with others in partnership and collaborations, promoting health education and having a quality workforce to achieve the districtís public health mission.
Section 3709.01 of the Ohio
Revised Code, divides the State of Ohio into health districts. Each
city constitutes that which is known as a "city health district".
The organizational structure of the Lorain District Municipal Board consists
of two parts; a Board of Health and its staff.
Board of Health
The Board of Health is the
governing body for the health district under Ohio law. The Board
has authority to hire staff, develop programs, and is required to enforce
specific sections of the Ohio Revised Code and Rules of the Ohio Public
Health Council. The Board may make such orders as are necessary for
its own government, for the health of the public the prevention or restriction
of disease, and the prevention, abatement, or suppression of nuisances.
There are five members on the Board of Health who donate their time for the betterment
of the health of our residents. Members are appointed by the Mayor
with the approval of City Council to serve for a period of five years,
one member appointed or re-appointed each year. Board meetings are
held on the third Wednesday of every month, special meetings are called
when urgency dictates.
