The Lorain City Health Department is comprised of a staff of professionals technically trained working towards protecting the environment and promoting the health and welfare of the citizens of Lorain.

Health Districts
Section 3709.01 of the Ohio
Revised Code, divides the State of Ohio into health districts. Each
city constitutes that which is known as a "city health district".
The organizational structure of the Lorain District Municipal Board consists
of two parts; a Board of Health and its staff.
Board of Health
The Board of Health is the
governing body for the health district under Ohio law. The Board
has authority to hire staff, develop programs, and is required to enforce
specific sections of the Ohio Revised Code and Rules of the Ohio Public
Health Council. The Board may make such orders as are necessary for
its own government, for the health of the public the prevention or restriction
of disease, and the prevention, abatement, or suppression of nuisances.
There are five members on the Board of Health who donate their time for the betterment
of the health of our residents. Members are appointed by the Mayor
with the approval of City Council to serve for a period of five years,
one member appointed or re-appointed each year. Board meetings are
held on the third Wednesday of every month, special meetings are called
when urgency dictates.
