Mission:
To increase Heart Health among Lorain County residents through education, advocacy and awareness.
Goals:
- To address clinical risk factors, nutrition, physical activity and tobacco
- To offer education to lower clinical risk factors of high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes
- To plan, promote, and present proper nutrition education
- To increase physical activity opportunities and to stress adequate physical activity engagement
- To advocate for tobacco-free environments, no tobacco use or quitting
- To work in settings of school, worksites, health care and community
Facts:
- The major risk factors that you can change, treat or modify are tobacco smoke, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes.
- Smokers' risk of heart attack is more than twice that of nonsmokers.
- The higher your blood pressure, the greater your risk of developing heart disease or stroke.
- The risk of coronary heart disease rises as blood cholesterol levels increase.
- Lack of physical activity is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.
- People who have excess body fat are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke even if they have no other risk factors.
- Diabetes seriously increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

- Stop smoking and avoid other people's smoke if you can.
- Control high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and high blood sugar.
- Choose foods low in saturated fat, cholesterol and salt in you diet. Eat more fruits and vegetables.
- Reduce your weight if you are overweight.
